Egypt Stresses Need to Halt Violations of Lebanese Sovereignty

Cairo: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the necessity of halting all violations of Lebanese sovereignty, reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to diplomatic engagement with all relevant parties to ensure the implementation of the Lebanese-Israeli ceasefire agreement and support Lebanon’s stability.

According to State Information Service Egypt, this came during a telephone call between Abdelatty and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, in which they discussed the latest developments in Lebanon as well as bilateral relations between the two countries. The two officials also addressed the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

During the call, Abdelatty underscored Egypt’s firm support for the full and unconditional Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the importance of adhering to UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He also reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Lebanon, its government, and national institutions, emphasizing the importance of strengthening state institutions to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability.

On Saturday, an Israeli strike on a vehicle in southern Lebanon killed at least two people, according to Lebanese state media. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Lebanese media reported that Israeli gunfire killed a woman. Under the ceasefire signed in late November, Lebanon’s military was to deploy in the south alongside United Nations peacekeepers as the Israeli army withdrew over 60 days. The deadline was later extended to 18 February after Israeli forces failed to withdraw from occupied Lebanese territory. Hezbollah was also expected to vacate its positions in the south, near the Israeli border, during that timeframe.
