Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration Badr Abdelatty recently met with Luxembourgish counterpart Xavier Bettel for consultations. The discussions aimed to strengthen bilateral ties, with Egypt looking forward to Luxembourg’s support within the European Union.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty praised the initial political consultations between the two nations held in April 2024. He emphasized the potential for enhanced economic cooperation in sectors such as energy, smart cities, digital economy, and banking. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of a joint business council to further these aims.
Abdelatty also welcomed Luxembourg’s backing in the EU, highlighting the European Commission’s decision to release pound 1 billion as part of a larger financial assistance package to Egypt. He expressed hope that Luxembourg would support Egypt in securing the European Parliament’s approval for a second tranche of pound 4 billion.
The meeting also covered regional issues, including the Gaza War, Syria, Sudan, Libya, and navigation security in the Red Sea. Abdelatty acknowledged Luxembourg’s support for the Palestinian Cause, ceasefire efforts, humanitarian aid, and UNRWA.
On the topic of Syria, Abdelatty underscored the need to maintain the country’s sovereignty and initiate an inclusive political process. Regarding Africa, he noted the connection between Egypt’s national security and the stability of the Horn of Africa.
