Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Mohamed Idris participated in a meeting of the UN Security Council’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa.
In a statement on Friday, the Foreign Ministry said that amb. Idris briefed members of the UN Security Council on activities of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, under the Egyptian presidency, and its efforts in supporting the African continent to achieve sustainable peace and development, particularly in light of the double challenges posed by the global coronavirus pandemic.
Idris underlined that the working group is one of the subsidiary organs of the UNSC that was established in 2002 to follow up on the implementation of the UNSC’s recommendations to prevent and resolve conflicts in Africa.
It also works for strengthening cooperation between the UNSC, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other UN agencies dealing with Africa, as well as making recommendations to the UNSC to promote cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union (AU) with regard to the prevention and settlement of conflicts in Africa, he added.
He further noted that he fully briefed the working group on the UN Peacebuilding Commission’s efforts, particularly with regard to monitoring the implementation of recommendations contained in the UN Secretary General’s report and the UN General Assembly (UNGA)’s resolution on the causes of conflicts and promoting sustainable peace and development in Africa.
Amb. Idris also pointed out that the Peacebuilding Commission played an active role in integrating the perspective of peacebuilding in discussions of the UNGA on this item, which was achieved through the advisory opinion presented by the Egyptian presidency of the Peacebuilding Commission to the UNGA president.
He also posted the working group on the Peacebuilding Commission’s involvement in international and regional situations in Africa, particularly in the Sahel and Great Lakes region.
It also proposed a number of recommendations to the UNSC on means of enhancing cooperation in peacebuilding in Africa.
