The Egyptian National Railways Authority (ENRA) issued instructions on Saturday 13/7/2024 for train drivers to reduce the speed of trains on most lines to ensure the safety of passengers, amid a heatwave that affects rail and equipment functioning.

In a statement, ENRA said this measure is necessary to prevent emergencies, noting that train speeds will return to normal once temperatures drop.

The authority added that specialized emergency teams are deployed to monitor temperatures around the clock and assess their impact across the lines to ensure that trains run smoothly in the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt.

ENRA apologized to passengers for any delays caused by the high temperatures.

Egypt has endured a series of gruelling heatwaves this summer, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees in the Greater Cairo area and Nile Delta and over 45 degrees in Upper Egypt.
