Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad discussed in a meeting with her Kenyan counterpart Roselinda Soipan Tuya cooperation in launching a number of initiatives that matter Africa at the 27th edition of the UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, that will kick off on Sunday in Sharm El Sheikh city.
During the meeting, the environment minister lauded the great support offered by the Kenyan government to environmental conservation efforts at the regional level, according to a statement released by the Environment Ministry on Friday.
Fouad said Egypt, during its chairmanship of the COP27, will initiate a number of initiatives that concern African countries, including an initiative for achieving gender equality and an initiative for supporting the empowerment of African women to address the effects of climate change, as well as launching the first network of African women ministers of environment to demonstrate Africa’s unity in light of the suffering of African women from the impacts of climate change.
Egypt will also introduce an initiative for waste management in Africa by 2050, which focuses on increasing the rate of waste collection and recycling on the continent and providing job opportunities for young people, Fouad added.
On her part, the Kenyan minister expressed appreciation of the efforts exerted by Fouad in the environment field, voicing hope for the success of COP27, especially in light of its importance in tackling a major challenge to African states.
Tuya said Kenya looks forward to debating climate-related topics at the COP27, such as the themes of waste management, losses and damages, just transition and women empowerment in the face of climate change.
