Egypt, Japan Discuss Curbing Plastic Pollution


Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad asserted on Wednesday 18/9/2024 that the industrial sector is an important partner in the system of curbing the single-use plastic bags, reiterating the necessity to create suitable alternatives.

This came during Fouad’s meeting with Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Oka Hiroshi and his accompanying delegation to discuss means to boost mechanisms of bilateral cooperation in curbing plastic pollution and technical and technological support in preparing national reports.

The meeting tackled the latest developments of cooperation in the field of limiting single-use plastic bags via project “supporting the promotion of circular economy practices on single-use plastic value chain”.

Fouad lauded the support of the Japanese side to the project which lasts till 2026 to contribute to having important results in this field via establishing a unit for studies that support the future activities of the project and boost cooperation with the sectors of petrochemicals and industry as importan
t partners in this system.

She noted to the importance of holding a workshop in the coming period on plastic in cooperation with the Japanese side to shed light on the efforts exerted by Egypt in this field.

Meanwhile, Hiroshi lauded cooperation with the Egyptian side in the field of limiting single-use plastic bags.

He praised the role of the ministry in coordinating between the different bodies concerned.

Hiroshi said that he is looking forward to more fruitful outcome during the extension period of the project and raising the awareness with the dimensions of the issue.

He pointed out to his country’s keenness on merging the considerations of climate and environment, adding that Japan is keen on partnership with Egypt in the field of energy production from wind.
