Cairo: Egyptian Minister of Industry and Transport and Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Kamel el Wazir, has announced the inauguration of a new roll-on/roll-off (RORO) maritime shipping route between Egypt and Italy. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the export of Egyptian agricultural goods, particularly fresh crops, to Italy and broader European markets.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the establishment of the RORO route aligns with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to position Egypt as a regional hub for global transport, logistics, and trade. The announcement was made during a ceremony hosted by the Italian authorities at the Port of Trieste, marking the arrival of the route’s inaugural journey.
Wazir highlighted that the successful launch of this route results from joint efforts to create a green shipping corridor between Egypt and Italy, utilizing refrigerated and dry trucks for the transportation of goods. He described the maritime corridor
as a sustainable and enduring link of friendship between the two nations.
Furthermore, Wazir emphasized that this project will enhance Egypt’s capabilities, positioning the nation as a central logistics zone bridging Europe and Africa. It also offers an opportunity for Egypt to leverage European expertise in land transport. He praised the collaborative efforts in implementing several projects across smart road systems, subways, railways, and maritime transport, expressing Egypt’s eagerness to further strengthen its ties with Italy in the transport and industrial sectors.
