Egypt Introduces Innovative Catheter-Based Pulmonary Valve Implantation

Cairo: Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population announced on Thursday the launch of a catheter-based pulmonary valve implantation system at the National Heart Institute, under the General Organisation for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes (GOTHI), as per a Cabinet statement. The new system provides a medical procedure that serves as an alternative to open-heart surgery, targeting both children from the age of 10 and adults who have complex congenital heart conditions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the procedure is specifically designed for patients experiencing severe pulmonary valve stenosis or regurgitation. These conditions are particularly challenging for individuals who have previously undergone corrective surgeries and now suffer from weakened heart muscles. The catheter-based technique offers these patients a safer treatment option.

Medical studies confirm the technique’s efficiency, noting that it significantly reduces surgical risks and shortens hospital stays. By accelerating patient turnover, the procedure eases the burden on healthcare facilities and helps reduce waiting lists, thus enhancing the overall healthcare delivery system in the country.
