Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad asserted Egypt, while chairing the 27th session of the Conference of Parties (COP27) to the UN Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC), is keen on achieving the interests of developing, African and Arab countries.
The UAE will play host to and chair COP28, she mentioned in a discussion panel, held by the Commercial International Bank (CIB) in cooperation with the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies on Monday.
Fouad went on to say COP27 offers an opportunity for highlighting pressing climate issues to the world.
She said it is necessary to accelerate the pace of climate action including adaptation and mitigation efforts.
Fouad noted the world at large is trying to rally efforts for facing confronting the bad impacts of climate change, which, she added, is a matter of great necessity to the African continent.
The minister said the Egyptian government is acting to promote the participation of the private sector in climate projects.
The UN climate summit this November in Egypt represents a major opportunity to address the needs of vulnerable countries, especially when it comes to adaptation, resilience and addressing loss and damage, she said.
Vulnerable countries’ urgent needs are underscored by the recent work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which revealed the devastating climate impacts we are already experiencing with just 1.1°C of warming — and how much worse things will get as temperatures climb to 1.5°C and beyond, she noted.
