Egypt condemned Tuesday the Knesset’s approval of two bills that limit the work of the UNRWA describing the move as one in a series of Israeli violations of international law and humanitarian international law.
The bills passed on Monday ban the UNRWA’s activities in Israel as well as any coordination between the government and the agency.
As such, the country withdrew from the 1967 treaty that allowed the UN organization to provide services to Palestinian refugees in territories controlled by Israel.
The statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Egypt’s rejection to Israeli practices aimed at the displacement of Palestinian residents, eliminate the Palestinian right of return and Palestinian refugees’ right in compensation.
Hence, Egypt demanded the international community, and UN bodies, mainly the Security Council, to take a firm stance on “those crimes, and blunt and systematic Israeli violations,” denouncing that Israel does not merely commit crimes against civilians but also t
argets all efforts that would alleviate their suffering.
The statement stressed that the role of the UNRWA was indispensable, and that it was about time that the Security Council would fulfill its duties pertaining to the maintenance of international peace and security.
Egypt added that that the international community had failed to safeguard its humanitarian principles and values in the face of Israeli violations, only showing indolence.
