Ministry of Environment is joining the global celebration of World Migratory Bird Day.

In a statement Saturday 12/10/2024, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad emphasized the importance of Egypt’s participation as it is a country serving as a key stopover for many migratory bird species.

She described bird migration as a unique natural phenomenon, showcasing the remarkable ability of living organisms to adapt to changing seasons and different environments.

The World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated on the second Saturday in May and the second Saturday in October, is an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

On October 12, 2024, the World Migratory Bird Day’s conservation theme is Protect Insects, Protect Birds, and focuses on the importance of insects as essential food sources for migratory birds.

Insects, the most diverse group of organisms on the planet, are crucial to the food web. They are not only the prima
ry food source for a large majority of bird species around the world, but they also support other species of plants and animals. For birds that depend primarily on insects as their main food source, the ebb and flow of insect populations can greatly affect the timing, duration, and success of their migration. The timing of migration is highly dependent on when food resources, like insects, will be abundant for birds to replenish their energy reserves at stopover locations in grasslands, forests, and wetlands, along their migratory journeys.

All around the globe, insect populations appear to be declining at unprecedented rates, which can directly threaten birds and their ability to migrate, breed, and produce young.
