Egypt and Nigeria Explore Enhanced Energy Cooperation


Abuja: Egypt’s Ambassador in Abuja, Mohamed Fouad, has engaged in discussions with Nigerian Energy Minister Adebayo Adelabu to explore ways of strengthening the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy and electricity, with a focus on activating a memorandum of understanding signed in January 2023. During the meeting, the focus was on enhancing the existing collaboration to bolster the electricity sectors of both nations.



According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian ambassador emphasized the significant advancements Egypt has made in recent years in boosting the capacity and efficiency of its national grid and in expanding the use of new and renewable energy sources. Fouad expressed Egypt’s readiness to share its expertise in electricity production and distribution with Nigeria, which is currently pursuing an ambitious program to develop its electricity sector and resolve longstanding issues related to electricity generation capacity and distribution efficiency.



The Nigerian Energy Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, praised Egypt’s accomplishments in the energy sector and expressed a desire to leverage Egypt’s expertise for the Nigerian Presidential Metering Initiative. This initiative aims to enhance electricity generation capacity and improve the efficiency of distribution networks. Both parties also considered the potential involvement of Egyptian energy companies in implementing the Nigerian Presidential Metering Initiative.
