Cairo: Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem, engaged in discussions with German Ambassador in Cairo, Juergen Schulz, and his delegation on Tuesday to explore ways to fortify cooperation and address regional water challenges. Sweilem emphasized the longstanding ties between Egypt and Germany, which have resulted in numerous water-related projects, and expressed a desire to continue these partnerships.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Ambassador Schulz reiterated Germany’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Egypt, particularly in the domain of water resources. The meeting also highlighted Egypt’s ongoing support for African nations, especially those within the Nile Basin. Sweilem detailed Egypt’s initiatives in these countries, including wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting dams, solar-powered water wells, river docks, and rain forecasting centers.
During the discussions, Sweilem underscored the necessity of adhering to international river laws when execut
ing projects in upstream countries. He also reviewed the negotiations concerning the Ethiopian dam, noting that Egypt and Sudan have been striving for a fair, binding agreement for the dam’s filling and operation. However, Ethiopia’s reluctance to collaborate has impeded these efforts.
Additionally, Sweilem pointed out that some Nile Basin countries have signed a framework agreement without achieving full consensus, which contravenes international water laws and disregards the rights of Egypt and Sudan, potentially exacerbating divisions within the Nile Basin. He reaffirmed that managing international rivers necessitates an inclusive strategy where all basin countries are represented, decisions are reached unanimously, and the rights of all parties are safeguarded.
