Transport infrastructure is one of the current priority areas for development for the Egyptian government, which is looking to roll out an era of mega-projects, affirmed Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir.
He, meanwhile, hailed the participation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in financing the electric train project in Alexandria’s Abu Qir.
The minister’s remarks were made while addressing a conference to announce EBRD’s 2022-2027 cooperation strategy with Egypt.
The minister further said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, on the sidelines of the conference, to convert the Abu Qir railway into an electric train, with a grant worth 250 million euros from the European Investment Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Development Bank, in addition to 200 million euros from the public treasury as part of the state’s plan to develop the urban transport system.
