JAKARTA: The death toll from a landslide at an unlicensed gold mine on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island has risen to 12, with dozens still missing, a search and rescue official said Tuesday.

According to German Press Agency (dpa), the landslide occurred late Saturday in the village of Tulabolo Timur in Gorontalo province, where dozens of miners were working at a small-scale, unlicensed gold mine.

Heriyanto, Head of the Gorontalo Search and Rescue Agency, said 104 people were affected by the landslide. Of those, 44 were rescued and 48 remained missing, he said. “The weather and terrain conditions are the main obstacles faced by the joint search and rescue team,” Heriyanto added.

The search for the missing was temporarily suspended on Monday night due to heavy rain, but efforts resumed on Tuesday morning.
