COP28 mobilising world for gradual, secure, equitable energy transition: Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum

Nani Ould Chrougha, Mauritania’s Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Energy in Mauritania, has said the UAE has succeeded in mobilising the world for a gradual, safe and equitable energy transition.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the conference in Dubai, Chrougha said that the UAE also thrived to ensure that all countries understand the need for a permanent, secure, and sustainable energy transformation.

He then commended the UAE’s exemplary organisation of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in an exceptional and perfect manner, with significant initial outcomes and inclusive participation from everyone.

According to Saleh, his country has significant developmental capabilities in wind, air, and solar energy, with some 780 kilometres of coastline on the Atlantic and vast areas with very low population densities. Consequently, it aspires to become a hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen production in the future, he added.

He highlighted his country’s belief that
renewable energy is in the best interest of the entire world, as well as Mauritania’s substantial capabilities.

Currently, Mauritania generates 43 percent of its electricity from renewable energy, specifically wind and solar power, he added, noting that the UAE has been a pioneer and key partner in this area of development.

Mauritania is setting its sights on a clean energy future, aiming for half of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. This ambitious target received a major boost yesterday by signing a contract with an Emirati company to build a 100-megawatt solar power station in the country.

Recognising the potential of green hydrogen, the Mauritanian government is drafting a legal framework to attract private investments in this promising sector. It will act as a safety net for investors, protecting their rights and encouraging them to leap into green hydrogen production in Mauritania.

Saleh invited Emirati investors, stating, “Come and be a part of our journey towards a sustainable
future. Let us build large-scale projects in renewable energy and green hydrogen together.”
