The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) hosted its latest Changemakers Majlis at COP28. Held at the Actionist Hub in the Green Zone, the 14th Majlis focused on water security and the protection of ecosystems and communities.
Water security is a pressing global concern, impacting economic stability, environmental health, and the wellbeing of communities. Climate change, pollution, and over-extraction of water resources have threatened water availability and quality, endangering ecosystems and human populations.
Moderated by Khulood Al Atiyat, Senior Strategist at Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, the session highlighted the challenges of water security in ecosystems and consumption. The Majlis examined the critical importance of water security for the stability of ecosystems and communities. It explored innovative policies and technologies that can accelerate efforts to protect sources of water and drive innovation in water systems.
In her opening remarks, Moza Neimi, Director of
Productivity and Demand from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the fundamental importance of water to the global ecosystem and spoke about the UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036, which aims to ensure sustainable access to water, both during normal and emergency conditions in line with local regulations, the standards set by the World Health Organisation, and the country’s vision to achieve prosperity and sustainability.
Experts pointed out that by 2030, the global demand for water will outstrip supply by 40%, and approximately 1.6 billion people will have limited access to safe drinking water. Issues such as lack of data, leakages, education, and awareness are major barriers to water conservation across all levels of society.
The Majlis highlighted the policies that support research and design in water innovation and the amplification of technological advancements to safeguard water resources for future generations. The speakers suggested the collaboration between artists, product desig
ners and scientists in creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing structure for innovations that help conserve water.
To safeguard water security, the participants observed there is a strong need for sufficient data and effective usage of available technologies to monitor water resources. They also underlined the importance of behavioural and mindset shifts and empowering the community by strengthening awareness of water security to make impactful changes.
