Hon. Beatrice Anywar Atim, Uganda’s Minister of State for Environment, reaffirmed her country’s keenness to raise awareness on the dangers of climate change and the importance of planting more trees and forests to reduce CO2.
She called on developed countries to find urgent innovative solutions because ‘the existence of the least developed countries is at stake’.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai, underpinned the importance of the commitment to international pledges aimed at protecting the environment, adding the COP28 is an ‘actions summit and a key opportunity to save the least developed countries’.
The Ugandan minister expressed her appreciation to the UAE for hosting COP28, especially with operationalising the Loss and Damage Fund and the announcement of the UAE as the first contributor to Fund with US$100 million to support developing countries in confronting climate change.
Uganda is one of the least developed countries and the one of the least emitters o
f carbon emissions, she stated, adding that her country has suffered from many natural disasters such as landslides, floods, and droughts, which in turn have affected the livelihoods of communities there.
She then pointed to the several initiatives being undertaken by Uganda to adapt and reduce carbon emissions through new energy projects.
