Cairo: Mr. Mohamed Abdel-Latif, the Minister of Education and Technical Education, and Mr. Hani Sewilam, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, have signed a joint cooperation protocol on Sunday, March 23, 2025, during the World Water Day events. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the European Union, seeks to integrate water awareness into school curricula to enhance understanding of water’s importance for life and sustainable development in Egypt.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the event was attended by notable figures including Advisor Adnan Al-Fangari, the Minister of Justice, Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, the Minister of Awqaf, and Advisor Mahmoud Fouzy, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Political Communication. The protocol aims to cultivate awareness about natural resource preservation among future generations.
In his remarks, Mr. Abdel-Latif emphasized the urgency of addressing the global crisis of rapidly disappearing glaciers and its consequences, which, although distant from Egypt, have significant impacts. He highlighted the threats posed by rising sea levels to the Nile Delta and underscored the need for immediate action through effective policies and education.
Mr. Abdel-Latif elaborated on the integration of water and climate education into national curricula, aiming to equip students with necessary knowledge. He stressed the importance of schools becoming centers of innovation where students can engage in research and problem-solving initiatives related to environmental challenges.
The Minister also announced memoranda of understanding signed with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the Ministry of Awqaf. This collaboration aims to promote environmental responsibility and instill sustainability values across generations by integrating educational, policy, and community awareness efforts.
Mr. Sewilam, in his address, acknowledged the European Union’s cooperation in celebrating World Water Day. He outlined Egypt’s current water situation and the measures being implemented to maximize water resource benefits through technological advancements and public awareness.
The EU Ambassador to Egypt, Angelina Eichhorst, expressed support for initiatives involving young generations in environmental protection efforts, emphasizing education’s role in ensuring a sustainable water future.
The event featured a presentation on Cairo Water Week 2025, discussing global water challenges and opportunities for Egypt to enhance water resource sustainability through international cooperation.
