China’s ceramics industry flourishes, expands global presence

BEIJING: China cemented its status as the world’s top ceramics producer, exporting 15.48 million metric tonnes from January to October 2023. Total industrial ceramic output exceeds $21 billion in the country.

The industry is revitalised through the implementation of automation and innovation. Tongxin Ceramics, located in southeast Fujian province, has incorporated 3D printers, kilns, and glazing lines to enhance both capacity and quality. According to the People’s Daily, a single worker now accomplishes tasks that previously required the manual labour of sixteen individuals.

Companies also prioritise the development of novel products. Chongqing Kingway, for instance, successfully produced self-sterilising ceramics following an extensive experimentation phase of 1,000 trials. These ceramics exhibit an impressive antibacterial rate of over 95 percent against commonly found bacteria. Moreover, they boast exceptional durability, surpassing 100,000 rinses.

Central Hunan province is a hub for advanced ceramics u
sed in aerospace, optics and machinery. Top “little giants” Hunan Meicheng and Xinxing Electronic Ceramics employ cutting-edge tech, exporting over $40 million yearly.
