GUANGZHOU: China is promoting the new energy industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in southern China, attracting high-end manufacturing companies to the area.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), an energy storage company in the Nansha District of the Greater Bay Area achieved a milestone by transforming a 270,000-square-metre wasteland into its lithium-ion battery manufacturing base and research and development centre within a span of 320 days.

Zhu Kunqing, general manager of Guangzhou Rongjie Energy Technology, said they chose the area because of its rich talent base.

“Lithium-ion batteries, including energy storage, are technically a very deep and broad industry, so the demand for talents is very large. Our Pearl River Delta is the birthplace of the lithium battery industry, so there are quite a lot of talents in this area,” CCTV quoted Zhu Kunqing as saying.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s Global Innovation Index 2023, the Shenzhen-Hong K
ong-Guangzhou science and technology cluster ranked second in the world for four consecutive years.

To keep up with the latest frontier of the industry, Zhu said that with a total investment of US$2.7 billion and an annual value of $4.8 billion, the company has hired a research and development team of more than 300 people to guide its production.

“In order to ensure the realisation of technical concepts, all of our construction, planning and design personnel are experienced. That’s why we’ve developed so fast,” he said.

By 2027, Guangdong Province aims to achieve CN¥1 trillion (about $138 billion) in annual revenue from its new energy storage industry. Cheng Hailiang, deputy director of Nansha District Bureau of Development and Reform, said the government has professional teams to support entrepreneurship in this emerging industry.

“For this kind of new energy enterprises, we provide policy support in terms of land use and project incubation. We also have a special team to serve them, to make sure project
s run smoothly from construction to operation,” he said.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electronics and clean energy industries, including electronic devices, solar energy storage, electric vehicles and medical equipment.
