BEIJING: China is expanding natural gas storage capabilities to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy future as part of its “carbon peaking and neutrality” strategy.
According to China Central Television, there is a proposal to establish six significant gas storage hubs nationwide, comprising a collective of 50 gas storage facilities. The anticipated cumulative working gas capacity is projected to surpass 100 billion cubic metres.
In 2020, the country issued a guideline on further beefing up the infrastructure construction and storage capacity of natural gas to promote stable and sound development of the sector. The guideline emphasised that efforts should be made to optimise construction layout and strengthen the development of standards in the sector.
China Oil and Gas Piping Network Corporation (PipeChina) is leading the charge in building and operating gas storage to support China’s energy goals.
“According to the energy storage construction plan, during the ’14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025)’ period
, PipeChina will further accelerate the construction of LNG (liquefied natural gas) receiving stations and underground gas storage facilities, adding more than 10 billion cubic metres of gas storage capacity. This will provide important support for the construction of China’s natural gas production, supply, storage, and sales system,” said Song Mingxin, general manager and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Energy Storage Technology Company, China Oil and Gas Piping Network Corporation.
