The Cabinet, in a session held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, approved several agreements and regulations aimed at enhancing regional and international cooperation, governance framework, and judicial system.
One of the key agreements endorsed by the Cabinet is the extension of the electricity sales contract between the Kingdom of Jordan, represented by the National Electricity Power Company, and the Republic of Iraq, represented by the General Electricity Transmission Company – Central Region. The amendment extends the contract for an additional 12 months from the date of signing while maintaining the existing terms, ensuring continuity of energy collaboration between the two nations.
In addition to the energy agreement, the Cabinet approved the necessary procedures to activate an agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). This agreement will establish and manage the EIB’s representative office in the Kingdom, a move expected to bolster financial cooperation and e
conomic development.
The Cabinet also approved a twinning agreement between the city of Petra and the city of Jiuquan in the People’s Republic of China. This partnership aims to strengthen cooperation in economic, tourism, and cultural fields between the two cities, which share rich historical and cultural significance.
On the regulatory front, the Cabinet adopted several significant measures aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency of the public and judicial sectors.
The amended regulation of the Jordanian Judicial Institute System for 2024 was approved, a move designed to open competition for employees of the General Secretariat of the Judicial Council for seats in the Jordanian Judicial Institute Diploma Program. These employees will compete alongside their counterparts from the Ministry of Justice.
Furthermore, the Cabinet approved the rationale for the draft government leadership system for 2024. This draft regulation was referred to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau to complete the necessary l
egal procedures for its formal adoption. The new system is part of the government’s ongoing public sector modernization efforts and aims to develop an integrated framework for managing and empowering leadership within the public sector.
The proposed government leadership system is designed to sustainably meet the government’s need for qualified, well-trained leaders in a systematic manner. It will align with national priorities and future visions, organizing all matters related to the leadership selection process, and ensuring a streamlined and efficient approach to managing leadership positions. If approved, this draft system will replace the existing leadership appointment system No. 34 of 2021, creating a more robust framework for leadership development.
In other decisions, the Cabinet approved the recommendations of the Committee for Settling Pending Issues between Taxpayers and the Income and Sales Tax Department. These measures aim to resolve the tax status of 159 companies and taxpayers who have outs
tanding obligations under the Income Tax Law and the General Sales Tax Law.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the recommendations of the Committee for Reviewing Pending Claims between Taxpayers and/or Violators and the Jordanian Customs Department. The settlement covers 13 cases, provided that the individuals involved commit to paying all remaining amounts owed, including fees, taxes, and expenses, within two months from the date of the decision.
