Maryam Al Balooshi, UAE Lead Negotiator for Aviation Climate Change, Director of the first Environmental Protection Department at the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and Deputy Chair of the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), said that the outcomes of the third ICAO Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) will shape ICAO’s decisions and plans for the coming period and will help set a clear path ahead for the aviation industry.

In her statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of CAAF/3 hosted by the UAE, Al Balooshi stressed that the conference was held at a crucial time for the sector, as it coincides with the setting of a specific target for 2050, amid growing pressures on the sector to take more positive steps towards energy transition and sustainability.

The ICAO aims to support developing countries in terms of funding, capacity building, and infrastructure development, thereby bridging the g
ap between developed and developing countries in terms of rolling out low-carbon and sustainable aviation fuel solutions, to accelerate their journeys towards decarbonising the sector by 2050, she explained.

Al Balooshi highlighted the UAE’s leadership in sustainable fuel production, affirming that the country has made major strides towards producing low-carbon and eco-friendly fuels.

Earlier this year, the UAE unveiled a comprehensive roadmap detailing its production objectives and targets for 2030, which provides a clear path forward, and by setting these ambitious goals, the country has confirmed its commitment to leading the charge in sustainable energy production, she added.

The UAE aims to establish itself as both an investor and a hub for the production of sustainable aviation fuel and low-carbon fuels, and it currently heads the Arab region’s environmental committee, Al Balooshi further added, highlighting the country’s keenness to support Arab countries’ goals in terms of developing alternative fu
el sources and decarbonising the aviation sector.
