Budding Indian Ocean regional organisation to have permanent secretariat

NEW DELHI: The Colombo Security Conclave (CSC), a nascent regional organisation dealing with subjects ranging from maritime safety and trafficking to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, is to have a permanent secretariat.

Senior officials of India, Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the Secretariat. They also signed the Charter of the CSC, according to a press release by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

The platform was initially created as a trilateral forum for maritime cooperation among India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. In 2020, it was formally christened as the CSC.

Mauritius joined the CSC in 2022 and Bangladesh, which had observer status, was admitted as a full member last month. Seychelles has observer status in the CSC.

‘The CSC’s core objective is to promote regional cooperation by addressing challenges of common concern to the Member States,’ the press release said.
