Belgium’s gov’t resigns after losing European elections

Amman: Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said that Belgium’s King Philippe has accepted his resignation after his party, the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats, suffered a heavy loss in Sunday’s European elections.

“The current government will manage current affairs and prepare the transition to a new team,” de Croo said Tuesday in a post on his X account. De Croo will remain interim prime minister until a new coalition is formed.

“I would like to sincerely thank our voters and fighters. The election results are a disappointment, and I take responsibility for that,” he added in his post.

De Croo received only 5.4 percent of the national vote, down 3.1 percent compared to the last federal election held five years ago.
