The Arab Parliament on Tuesday denounced Israel, the occupying power, for approving a so-called strategic development plan for East Jerusalem, part of its Judaization scheme aimed to change the city’s Arab identity and landmarks.

The Israeli government yesterday approved a five-year, $843 million plan for the development of infrastructure and services in occupied East Jerusalem.

In a statement, the Arab Parliament reiterated that Jerusalem will remain the eternal capital of the Palestinian state, warning against attempts to undermine the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and calling for maintaining the legal and historical status quo of the Islamic and Christian holy shrines in the occupied city and the Jordanian custodianship over its sacred places.

It stressed that Al-Aqsa Mosque, Al Haram Al Sharif, is a place of worship for Muslims only, and is a red line, not only for the Palestinians, but for all Muslims, warning that violating it means igniting a fire that cannot be stopped.

The statement called on the international community and human rights organizations to intervene urgently to stop the Israeli attacks and violations against the Palestinian people, end the occupation and enable the Palestinians to regain their legitimate rights, including the right to return and establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
