NEW YORK: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit Wednesday called on Greece to recognize the independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.

He made this call during a meeting with the Greek Foreign Minister, George Gerapetritis, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, Aboul-Gheit expressed appreciation for Greece’s positions in support of the Palestinian cause and ongoing Support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

He expressed his hope that Greece would support the resolutions related to the Palestinian cause during its upcoming membership in the UN Security Council for in 2025-2026.

Aboul-Gheit stressed the legal importance incurred by recognizing the State of Palestine, as such a recognition would ensure that Palestine would be placed on an equal legal footing with Israel, the occupying power, in any future negotiations on the final settlement.

He also stressed the need to stop t
he Israeli aggression immediately, cautioning against the eruption of an all-out regional war that would have disastrous repercussions for everyone.
