Head of the Azhar’s institutes department Salama Dawoud inaugurated on Friday 18/02/2022 the second edition of Arabic Calligraphy Forum at Al Azhar Mosque.
The forum is held, under the sponsorship of Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb. It will last till February 27.
During his speech at the opening ceremony to honor Arabic calligraphy artists, Dawoud said that the forum aims at documenting Arabic calligraphy heritage.
He noted that Arabic calligraphy is very important in preserving the Arab and Islamic identities.
The forum aims to raise awareness of the importance of spreading the culture of mastering Arabic calligraphy.
UNESCO added Arabic calligraphy, a key tradition in the Arab and Islamic worlds, to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list on December 14, 2021.
“Arabic calligraphy is the artistic practice of handwriting Arabic script in a fluid manner to convey harmony, grace and beauty,” UNESCO said.
“The fluidity of Arabic script offers infinite possibilities, even within a single word, as letters can be stretched and transformed in numerous ways to create different motifs,” it added.
