Vast swathes of Brazil’s forests have been ravaged by fires, with 22.38 million hectares affected from January to September, according to a report released on Friday by MapBiomas.

September alone saw 10.65 million hectares consumed by flames.

Among Brazil’s states, Mato Grosso, Para, and Tocantins in the north were the hardest hit, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

The Amazon has been the most impacted biome, with 11.3 million hectares burned, the report stated.
